GHP-2800 Project Receives NPHQ 2005 Gold Level Award

Highway teams from a dozen states, representing a wide range of road and bridge projects in every region of the country, have earned top quality awards from the National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ), the highway advocacy group. An APAC-Atlantic, Inc., project was named a recipient of a NPHQ 2005 Gold Level Award. The project was for the I-26 paving and welcome center/rest area in Madison County, North Carolina.

The I-26 project included a six-lane concrete roadway slipformed by a GOMACO GHP-2800 through the Appalachian mountain range. The contract was awarded to the Asheville division of APAC-Atlantic, Inc. Also assisting on the project was Ballenger Paving, another division of APAC.

“The I-26 project in Madison County, North Carolina, provided us with an opportunity to excel at our craft in a scenic showcase. The commitment to quality from everyone involved in the construction has received praise from numerous officials and citizens, alike,” said John Caldwell, State-Work Manager, APAC-Atlantic, Inc., Asheville Division.

Bob Templeton, executive director for NPHQ, noted how each recognized project represented "the application of quality practices, innovative thinking, and stakeholder-oriented planning."

The NPHQ awards are judged on overall quality; the partnership between state departments of transportation and private contractors; technical and materials innovations; the effectiveness and creativity of public involvement; whether and how projects met or exceeded deadlines, costs and deliverables; responsiveness to environmental needs and opportunities; and adherence to other principles of quality management.

The NPHQ encourages the use of quality practices that will usher in a new era of roadway investment and performance to improve safety and service for highway users. NPHQ is composed of the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Texas Transportation Institute, the Foundation for Pavement Preservation, the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, the American Highway Users Alliance, the Associated General Contractors of America, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Kiewit Corporation, and the URS Corporation.

The award-winning project was featured in GOMACO World Vol. 31. No. 1, and can be found online at http://www.gomaco.com/gomacoworld.
