GOMACO's new generation Commander III was honored as one of the Top 100 new products for 1999 by Construction Equipment magazine.

"In evaluating products for the Top 100 Awards, we look for advances in technology, new product lines, significant improvements to existing products or a product that increases competition in its field," Kirk Landers, editor-in-chief of the magazine, said. "We receive more than 2500 product releases annually and have to choose each month which products have greater interest to the majority of our readers."

The new generation Commander III was first introduced in March 1999 at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas, Nevada. Its development began long before its show debut.

"Our mission was to take a machine that's been on the market for 25 years and update its looks, capacities, and efficiencies while maintaining its ability to keep market share and perform several applications," Kevin Klein, GOMACO research and development manager, said.

"We had contractors approach us with suggestions and ideas on ways to modify the Commander III," Jim Homan, a GOMACO research and development project engineer, said. "The ideas made sense, but we were also concerned about taking a machine with 25 years of proven reliability and changing it. It was a matter of how do you make a machine that's already the best even better?"

The new generation Commander III being named as one of the Top 100 new products is proof that GOMACO and the Research and Development Department were successful.

"The new generation Commander III is the most revolutionary product of the 90s for concrete paving. Our design engineers gave this machine a total make-over without affecting the versatility of this famous slipform paver," Gary Godbersen, GOMACO president and CEO, said. "It is the best selling slipform paver of all time and is the choice around the world. We announced that the new machine would be available in the year 2000 and as of January 1, we have doubled anticipated sales."

GOMACO has received past Top 100 Awards for the GT-3600 curb and gutter machine in 1992, the GHP-2800 paver in 1993, the GP-2600 paver in 1995, the GT-3200 curb and gutter machine in 1996, and the In-The-Pan Dowel Bar Inserter (IDBI) in 1997.

Editors from the publication judge the entries and are responsible for selecting the 100 most significant product introductions of the year.
